Advice and useful contacts for carers over Christmas
by Devon Carers
Devon Carers are open Monday-Friday 8am-6pm and Saturdays 9am-1pm but will be closed on the bank holidays (25 and 26 December 2019, and 1 January 2020). If carers need support during these times, please call Care Direct on 0345 600 0388.

Top tips from carers for managing Christmas:
·         Talk to family and friends – raise concerns and worries, let them know how you’re planning to approach Christmas in advance and don’t be afraid to ask for help
·         Talk to other carers – peer support can be invaluable throughout the year but especially around Christmas. Find out about Devon Carers support groups in your area
·         Be kind to yourself – recognise the importance of your role and take some time to be generous to yourself too.
More tips from carers in Devon can be found in the Devon Carers winter magazine which is sent to GP surgeries in Devon and is available online.

Carers and health professionals can contact Devon Carers via the website with the live chat facility or on the helpline 03456 434 435.

Why have your vaccination at YOUR GP Surgery?

Image result for nhs england flu

Why have your vaccination at YOUR GP Surgery?

· We offer a setting where we can check your medical records and make sure you get the most suitable vaccine

· We offer a fast, efficient and friendly flu clinic service with your local surgery team (and we really enjoy our drop in flu clinic sessions, it gives us a nice break from our ‘normal’ work)

· We can offer protection for those who may be forgetful by reducing the risk of duplication in vaccines being administered

· We can ensure continuity of care for our patients and carers (we know you already)

Please contact the surgery to book your appointment for your 2019/20 flu vaccination

Focus on E-Consult

We offer eConsult to allow our patients to get medical help without making an appointment or calling the practice.  Patients can also get health advice online.  Start your consultation here

By clicking the most appropriate link you can:

  • self check your symptoms 24/7 and find medical guidance that is written by doctors.
  • get administrative help (eg get a medical certificate)
  • seek medical advice from our doctors in the practice
When a response is requested we aim to do so by the end of the next working day, either by email (don't forget to check your junk email folder) or with a phone call from a clinician if more appropriate.

Important notes:
  • This is only for over 18s registered with our practice.
  • It is not an appropriate route to seek urgent medical help
  • It is not a bypass or shortcut for requesting a GP appointment

Better for You, Better for Devon - launch of Devon's Long Term Plan engagement

Devon is developing a local version of the national NHS Long Term Plan, called Better for you, Better for Devon. The plan will make sure we are fit for the future, providing high-quality care and better health outcomes for people and their families, through every stage of life.

Now here in Devon, we are starting an eight-week period of engagement (from 11 July to 5 September 2019) to develop our own Long Term Plan, Better for You, Better for Devon. The plan will focus on improving people’s health and mental health, and supporting people to stay well.

The challenges we face

Part of the conversation will centre on the big challenges we face, as these will influence the future of health and care:
·         Medical advances mean people are living longer – something we celebrate. But people now often live with multiple illnesses, such as cancer, heart problems and type 2 diabetes. We need to ensure services can provide what they need
·         Preventable illnesses like type 2 diabetes are increasing, and the amount of time people live in good health has been decreasing since 2012
·         Vital health and care jobs remain unfilled – 1 in 10 nurse jobs and 1 in 12 social worker posts in Devon remain vacant as demand for services increase. There is a shortage of people to undertake these roles
·         There have been increases in NHS funding, but peoples’ needs for services are growing faster
·         Devon’s population is growing and is expected to rise by about 33,000 people – equivalent to the population of Exmouth – over the next five years.
This will see us strengthening prevention to support people to live healthier lives, supporting GP and community services to intervene early to support local people, enhancing services to help children, young people and adults needing mental health support, and having high-quality, efficient hospital services in the right place when people need them.

We will work more closely with voluntary, community and social enterprise organisations, charities and the broader social care sector to improve people’s health and wellbeing.

To ensure we get really good detailed feedback, the majority of the engagement exercise will be delivered by local councils and NHS organisations, and will be based on local priorities. This will involve focus groups, face-to-face discussions and surveys at https://www.surveymonkey.co.uk/r/BetterDevon

Information for patients who are prescribed pregabalin and gabapentin

The government has reclassified pregabalin and gabapentin as controlled drugs. This means we can now only prescribe a maximum of one months supply of medication at a time and the prescription must be used within 28 days of the prescription date.

If you currently receive medication on a two monthly basis your pregabalin/gabapentin will now be monthly. If you would like us to switch all your medication to monthly to allow you to order all the medication at the same time please let us know. Please also let us know if your current dose does not match that on the prescription.

Supply of Medicines

The Government with NHS England has plans in place to ensure a continued supply of medicines to patients from the moment we leave the EU. Their advice is that patients will not need to and should not seek to store additional medicines at home.

We will be following advice from them regarding medications.

Gail Foreshew
Practice Pharmacist

From time to time, some medicines do become unavailable/out of stock and for all sorts of reasons.  Your GP will not necessarily know at the time of prescribing if the medication will be available from your chosen pharmacy.  If an item is out of stock your pharmacy will let you know and will be able to discuss your options with you.  If necessary they will inform us of any suitable alternative that your doctor may be able to prescribe instead.
